Posted on Friday, March 23, 2012 @ 15:56:55 CDT by kwpnews

President Mwai Kibaki receives the UEFA trophy from Mr Koen Morshusis, the Heineken East Africa Manager. The Trophy is on a tour of Mexico, Kenya, Tanzania and China.

NAIROBI, (KWP) - The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League trophy was today presented to President Mwai Kibaki at his Harambee House office.

President Kibaki thanked UEFA organizers and Heineken International, the lead sponsor of the UEFA league, for choosing Kenya as one of the destinations of the UEFA Champions League Trophy tour.

The UEFA Champions League trophy is on a tour of four countries including Kenya, Mexico, Tanzania and China.

The President, at the same time, reaffirmed his Government's commitment to the development of sporting activities in the country and expressed optimism that the tour of the coveted European trophy will inspire more Kenyan youths and boost the development of soccer in the country.

President Kibaki urged Heineken East Africa Company, a subsidiary of Heineken International, to sponsor Kenyan football clubs as a way of promoting soccer in the country.

The Head of State also encouraged UEFA Championships League clubs to visit and showcase their talents in Kenya.

Sports Assistant Minister Kabando wa Kabando lauded the presentation of the UEFA trophy and commended Heineken East Africa for sponsoring the tour of the trophy in Kenya.

"This is a historic moment for the country's sporting fraternity not only because the UEFA trophy has landed in Kenya but also because the President is the first Kenyan ever to hold the trophy," the Sports Assistant Minister said.

On his part, Heineken East Africa General Manager, Koen Morshuis, disclosed that plans are at an advanced stage to establish his company's regional headquarters in Kenya.
