Likoni's new ferries finally arrive
Posted on Wednesday, June 02, 2010 @ 17:28:09 CDT by kwpnews

MOMBASA - At last, the long awaited new ferries arrived Wednesday morning and docked at bath 1 at the port of Mombasa, aboard a Singapore ship from Beluga projects.

It was joy as residents and Kenya Ferry Services-KFS workers witnessed the grand entry of the vessels into the port at 8am local time.

The German-made vessels are expected to ease transport problems for thousands of commuters who use the Likoni channel everyday.

Construction of the vessels started in June 2008 at a cost of 1 billion shillings and ended in November last year.

However the arrival of the vessels has been postponed twice raising eyebrows. Area MP Masood Mwahima, KFS chairman Joseph Kahindi, and Managing Director Musa Hassan Musa received the ferries.

KFS chairman said they will advertise the tenders for the expansion of the docking areas for new the vessels next week.

The new ferries  which have a capacity to carry 500 passengers and 60 vehicles each per trip will start operating in the next three weeks .

The new ferries come as a relief to ferry users at Likoni channel who have been subjected to suffering due to the frequent  ferries break down.

The Likoni channel is currently being served by four ferries; MV Kilindini, MVPwani, MVHarambee and MVNyayo.

Tourism business in the South Coast had been affected due to poor infrastructure, made worse by the ferry mishaps.
