ISIOLO, Kenya (Reuters) - At least 29 people died in Kenya during a raid to steal cattle in the country's drought-ridden and remote northeast, officials said on Tuesday.

Clashes over water, livestock and pasture have long plagued Kenya's remote corners, particularly during severe droughts.

Local community leader Joseph Leparia said attackers from the Pokot tribe struck late on Monday, killing 21 ethnic Samburu herders and making off with more than 600 cows.

"Police reservists fought back and killed eight of them," Leparia told Reuters by telephone from Samburu East District. "They were all heavily armed with guns."

Local member of parliament Raphael Letimalo told Capital FM radio that 18 bodies were still scattered in his constituency.

"People fear for their security because the raiders are known," he said. "They came to steal the animals and ... clashed with the herders who tried to block their mission."

A regional police commander said at least four people had died and the matter was being investigated. Security in the area had been raised, the commander told the radio station
